Is taking the bus in Germany really that different to going on a bus ride in England? Hop on, hop off, right? So why write an article about it? Well, I did not think there was such a thing as ‘bus culture’, but living here taught me otherwise. Travelling on English buses is like an educational trip that teaches foreigners politeness and manners. Of course, I cannot speak for all foreigners since I don’t know about their personal ‘bus culture’, but I can definitely say that Germans can learn a lot from British public transport. I love the queues that form before the bus arrives, the calm entering of the bus, the polite ‘ After you ’ loops and the various ways to thank the bus driver for the ride when getting off. Wenn mal als Ausländer an England denkt, kommen einem meistens Bilder von London, der Königsfamilie und Schafen in den Sinn. Eng verbunden mit London natürlich auch die roten Doppeldeckerbusse, die kreuz und quer durch die Stadt schnaufen.  Doppeldecker gibt es aber nicht nur in London, nein, sie gibt es überall auf der Insel – allerdings selten rot, sondern türkisblau oder grün und seit Neuestem auch hochmodern (zumindest in Liverpool!): mit USB-Steckdose zum Aufladen elektronischer Geräte, WLAN und Elektrostrom! Willkommen im 21. Jahrhundert!  Die Innenausstattung eines solchen arriva Busses ist wirklich ziemlich beeindruckend, nicht zu vergessen die CCTV Kameras und Bildschirme, die für mehr Sicherheit sorgen sollen. In der Tat sehe ich es auch nur äußerst selten, dass Fahrgäste ihre Füße auf den gegenüberliegenden Sitz legen, was eventuell mit der zusätzlichen Überwachung zusammenhängen könnte. Have you ever seen a person in a pub drinking tea or coffee and thought it was odd? Did this person give you a slightly judgemental look when you ordered your pint? Well, you probably met a foreigner, or more precisely a German. When Tom and I first started hanging out with each other, I often asked him to meet me for a coffee in the afternoon. Although he never declined, I could sense some bewilderment but was unable to understand where exactly it came from. I knew he liked coffee, and after all, he always turned up, yet there was something that did not seem right. On the other hand, his idea of catching up confused me just as much. Once, after a quick shopping trip in town, he took me to a pub, we had lunch and a pint of beer/cider. Drinking in the middle of the day!? Whereas I felt the urge to go for a nice cup of coffee or tea afterwards, Tom got us some more pints of alcoholic beverages. So ein lockerer, fluffiger Hefezopf zum Sonntagskaffee oder Frühstück ist natürlich eine feine Sache. Glücklicherweise ist es auch unproblematisch so einen Zopf zu backen; die Zutaten bekommt man in jedem englischen Supermarkt ohne Probleme. Sollte also das Heimweh einmal hochkommen, dann steht einer therapeutischen Hefezopf-Backstunde nichts im Weg (außer natürlich die Wartezeit bis der Teig aufgegangen ist…). Falls ihr aber nicht selbst backen möchtet oder gar eine englische Alternative zu unserem Hefezopf sucht, dann kann ich euch hot cross buns empfehlen. Vor allem um Ostern sind sie sehr beliebt und werden durch viel Werbung angepriesen. In der Tat gibt es sie aber mittlerweile das ganze Jahr hindurch; bei akutem Heißhunger auf Hefegebäck könnt ihr hier also problemlos zugreifen. Was genau sind denn nun hot cross buns ? When I was cycling to town a few weeks ago, and was passing a range of houses, I was hit by a lovely smell of a freshly baked something. Somewhere in one of these houses, someone had just opened their oven, thus releasing a wonderful, slightly sweet scent that went straight up my sensitive nose and triggered a sudden craving for a German treat named ‘Hefezopf’. You can compare it to Easter hot cross buns, but bigger and in the shape of a plait. Just like hot cross buns, Hefezopf is often baked especially around Easter, but also as a cakey treat for a lazy weekend breakfast or Sunday afternoon (3pm: cake and coffee time!). You can eat it plain or dip it in your coffee. In my family, we have it with butter. Or honey. Or jam. And sometimes even with Nutella. Considering the ingredients and its sweetness, there would of course not be a need for any of these toppings. “For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of rest” Resting on a Sunday is a very common idea all over the world, especially in Christianised countries. Some people go to church, others enjoy sleeping in after a night out, maybe you prepare a Sunday Roast, do some housework, go to town for a pint and some shopping. Everything is possible on the day of rest…or is it!? It might be in your country, but it is definitely not in Germany! Germans take their Sundays very seriously. The Sunday rest is so important, that there is even a law for it! Since 1919 Sundays and bank holidays are “protected by law as days of rest from work and of spiritual improvement.” (Art. 139, German Basic Law). Along with the ‘Sonntagsruhe’ comes the ‘Ladenschlussgesetz’ which states that department stores, shopping centres etc. remain closed on Sundays and public holidays. Yes, dear readers, that’s right! No open shops on Sunday or a bank holiday. No shopping at Edeka, Aldi, Lidl...

Wenn man als Deutscher an Feiertage denkt, dann kommen einem zunächst christliche Feiertage wie Gründonnerstag, Fronleichnam oder Allerheiligen in den Sinn.  Die arbeitende Bevölkerung hofft natürlich vor allem auf Feiertage unter der Woche, so dass wenn möglich ein Brückentag zum verlängerten Wochenende verhelfen kann. Ein Feiertag in Deutschland ist eine ruhige Angelegenheit, vergleichbar mit einem entspannten Sonntag. Die Läden sind geschlossen und, je nach Anlass, auch mancher Club, worüber sich vor allem junge Menschen ärgern. Die Ausnahme bildet natürlich der 1. Mai, an dem die Deutschen dann doch mal aus sich herauskommen, sich auf feuchtfröhliche Wanderungen begeben und sich ihrer Wurstkultur auf kleinen Grill – und Straßenfesten hingeben. Wie wunderbar!
